Watch Live-Action ’The Little Mermaid’ Trailer, Be Part of our Confusion

Posted by Toby King on

Oh cool! Disney has finally started making their live-action adaption of The Little Mermaid and this is the first teaser trailer? Answer: nope.

Okay. So this must be a trailer for that other Little Mermaid movie, you remember that one, the one stuck in development hell over at Universal Pictures. Chloe Grace Moretz was going to star in it before she dropped out, and Sofia Copola was going to do the directing before she dropped out etc etc? Answer: again no, sorry no, it's not that one either.

It turns out there’s a third Little Mermaid movie coming, this one is being directed by Blake Harris and Chris Bouchard and it’ll be with us sometime later this year. It doesn't look amazing... but it doesn't look bad! I think the main misstep was titling it 'The Little Mermaid', when it's really about a mermaid stuck in a circus in the south of America. Calling it an adaption of the classic story we all know and adore is a stretch, to say the least. So why the name?

It might not be a 'straight to video' affair after all, the cast list looks pretty good! It's got William Moseley from The Chronicles of Narnia, Gina Gershon from Empire and Showgirls (!!), Shirley MacLaine and Poppy Drayton (who shared the screen together before in Downton Abby) so who knows, maybe we'll be flipping our fins over it when it's released.

Whilst you’re here looking for a fishy fix, I've got two bonus rounds for you. Firstly, you should check out a skit from this weekends Saturday Night Live. Scarlett Johansson came back to guest host the episode, who stars here as a disgusting anglerfish-maid named Kunk - a “fellow dweller of the deep”. It's super relatable content, no comedy to be found.

As a second bonus, here's Darth Vader singing Part of Your World.

Are you pumped up for the circus adaption of The Little Mermaid? Let's discuss in the comments below.
